THE New Zealand

Oh yeah! We went to the island country ‘The Land of the Long White Cloud’ – New Zealand. We had just complete 4 days there in and that was quiet sufficient for us to visit just the north island.

‘New Zealand’ in just a word - ‘Awesome’.

We left LAX on May 29th 2010 (Saturday) at 7.30 pm and reached in Auckland (The City of Sails) on May 31st (Monday) 5.30 am.

Day 1:

Immediately after we left the airport, we took a shuttle and drove to “Great Sights” one of the tour organizers there, the office is right near the sky tower (this is similar to one of the towers in various countries…., most country has its own tower which will be the highest building)

Booked the tour bus for 8 am and then got ready and started our next journey in the bus. We were about to go to “Bay of Islands” which is towards the north most of the north island. It took 3 hours for us to drive to that place in the bus. The path we took to reach the place was full of rain forests. That was cool to watch. Anywhere and everywhere you see, it full of green grasses and cows and sheeps on it. The bus stopped at a local shop in half way through the trip for a break and we had to have the breakfast there. We ordered 2 boiled eggs (they were kept in fridge and was given without even warming it), butter chicken sandwich and a tea. Guess what cost more? It’s the tea it cost more. It was almost $5 New Zealand dollars. Then we started the rest of the journey, it was full of turns in the mountains and our little girl had motion sickness and had a hard time in the bus until we reach there. We were dead tired after a 12 ½ hrs travel in the flight and then another 3 hours in the bus. Finally we made it to the ‘Bay of Islands’. This is not yet over. From here we need to take a boat ride for 3 ½ hours. So we thought of grabbing some lunch there at the local restaurant there. The one funny thing was we asked for a ‘to-go’ bag for the left-over’s and they didn’t understand. I showed them signs to make them understand and they figured it out finally. Then I asked them, what do you call that as in New Zealand? And they said its ‘Doggie’ bag. They themselves admitted the way we tell is pretty decent instead of a ‘doggie’ bag.

Get set for the boat ride! OOOHHOOO… excited. Then we took the boat ride. Kids had ultimate fun with the cool winds blowing on their face and they weren’t ready to come inside the boat till the whole ride in it. They took us near all the islands, we just saw every island from the boat and each island is named differently according to the shape or with any particular thing available in that island. For example we saw a bird island, where there were lots of birds… Final Island is the “Hole in the Rock”; there was a big hole in the rock, through which a boat can pass through. It was formed just by the erosion of rocks by the sea water hitting against it. Wow, that was really cool. We also saw a seal on the very top of one the mountains in one of the island. We were worn out after a long day and while coming back in the bus, we were fast asleep due to jet lag as well too much travel.

End of the day we went to our apartment. Are you surprised why an apartment? It should be a hotel right? No. In new Zealand they have apartments for daily rent basis like hotels. We wanted to have a different experience and so we stayed there. The name of the apartments is “Bianco Of Queens Apartments”. It was in the Queen St, which is the main street in Auckland.

The Apartment was a one bedroom apartment and it was fully furnished with all vessels, sofa, bed, coffee table, toaster, gas range, microwave, fridge with the breakfast for the next day, washer dryer….what else and what not. That was really good. We felt at home. We had 2 days stay in that apartment. We ordered food from an Indian restaurant and had our dinner. We had a deep sleep after a long day.

Day 2:

The day started with rain. Gosh! What are we going to do…? It wasn’t drizzling. It was a heavy rain. But still we had to move out; we didn’t have time to waste. We started with a cab to our car rental place. They were ‘discount cabs’ which was really good. They are the cheapest cabs throughout it seems. Our apartment recommended us to take that. We went to the car rental place and took a Toyota Prius with a car seat and a GPS so that we don’t get lost in the country. Since it was a right hand driving we were to take full insurance, we never know what will happen. All set. We went to the Mt Eden crate. This was a naturally formed crate due to volcano. But with the heavy rain we hardly saw the crate. We went near it and we could see only the board in front of it. Half heartedly we left that place and went to “Auckland Domain’, there also we weren’t able to see anything due to rain, so we went to the Auckland Museum, we were forced to enter it. We just had a coffee and a hot chocolate there and we came out of it and we took a big drive, hoping the rain would go away and we will have some fun. On the way we were welcomed by a big beautiful rainbow arch… We took a break and grabbed sandwiches from ‘Burger King’ and finally we went to Paihia beach, black sand beach. The rain stopped and we had a warm sun peeping out, and the throughout the ride, again it was full of rainforests. Sometimes I felt scared as we will be the only car driving in the whole road; though out the distance you can see. The kids left the foot prints in the black sand beach. They were following the sea gulls in the beach. They had fun keeping their feet in the water. We enjoyed to the core. Then we left to Waikato beach which is also called the ‘sun set beach’. We saw the sun set there in this beach. This was again a black sand beach. We took some sand for our remembrance. The day ended very well even though it started badly with a rain. While driving back we stopped in a local shop to get some native fruits. We bought Kiwi, Kiwano, Tomatillos, Fijiova, Snow peas, and Apples. We then stopped by a ‘Chinese Takeaway’ restaurant and grabbed our dinner. We came back to our apartment and ended our day.

Day 3:

This is Jun 2nd 2010. And it was our 6ht wedding anniversary. We marked our anniversary with New Zealand.
This day started quite relaxed, we were planning to drive 3 hours from Auckland to ‘Glowworm Caves’ in Waitomo. Before we get started for the big drive, we wanted to finish of the ‘patel points’ in Auckland. We took a quick drive to ‘sky tower’ had a nice view early in the morning. Then we wanted to cover the ‘viaduct harbor’. We had a very good city view and nice pictures came out there.
Then we weren’t satisfied without having covered the crate which we went on day 2 but couldn’t see anything. Today the weather favored us and we wanted to cover it too. We went there and again another full city view was got from there. Then we started our journey to Waitomo. We found lot of cows, sheeps and horses on our way. It was full of green valley with all these animals… and the nice sunny weather. The funny part was all the horses were wearing dress. May be to withstand the weather… not sure. More scenic land I have ever seen. Very few cars on the road and we had our own time during the full drive. Then we reached the ‘Glowworm Caves’ where we took a tour in the underground cave which was naturally formed, full of limestone spikes here and there. It was little bit scary but still there was whole bunch of people for each tour, so we had company. They switched of the lights now and then to show the Glowworms underneath the roof of the caves. It was really nice to watch them. Kids had a very good experience, but they didn’t like the caves as such though, as it was scary for them. They had a boat ride along with the tour inside the cave, and it was again full of glowworms. They told us the life cycle of the glowworms. It was interesting. Then from there we grabbed lunch at Mc Donald’s. The worst part throughout our journey was, the land was full of water and trees everywhere but no one gives water for drinking. Everything is commercialized and profit minded as the country itself depends on the tourist and they make money out of everything. Even in the Mc Donald’s in the juice machine, even when you buy a meal and we asked for water instead of any drink and they said you need to get bottled water and they don’t have an option in the juice machine for water. Can you believe this? And even a small bottle of water costs 4 to 5 bucks. Then from there we took another 2 and ½ hour’s drive to ‘Rotorua’ where the natural geysers are there. The full city is completely covered with natural geysers. And it smelled hydrogen sulphide once you step into the city. Rotorua is the only place in the world built on an active volcano. The city is full of smoke from the water bubbling naturally from earth. Those water are boiling at a temperature of 98 degree C. The people live an active life there. It’s not just a place for tourist; it was a full fledged city where people have their own life style. It was weird in the beginning that how these people life in this rotten egg smell every day, every minute. But then if we inhale that for 2 hours, you get used to the smell. 

We reached there around 6 in the evening to our hotel ‘ibis’. It was a good hotel with all basic amenities included. In the front desk, we enquired about the mouri cultural program which we researched and found via internet before our trip. They said, it will go on in every hotel at Rotorua. And they also had one, which will start by 6.30 pm and goes on until 9.30 pm. And they also said, the package comes with the big dinner buffet if mouri food. We ended up going to that function after refreshing ourselves from the long drive. This program held at the back of the hotel and we were invited by people dressed up with mouri cultural dress. We saw many people came in to watch that program. They asked us to start with the dinner and then the program will start following it. They had so many varieties of starters/appetizers( one of them was fresh fish salad- uncooked) with pumpkin soup, many main dishes (I could remember only some of them, lemon lamb, smoked salmon, mussels, some chicken , baked potato, sweet potato and many other) and so many desserts. By seeing the food items I didn’t want to give even a try. I just took a bread and butter and I ended up my dinner with it. But the kids had baked potato and some cheese and some bread. My husband had no other choice; he had to try some in front of the whole crowd. And he had a tough time. But finally he said the deserts were really good. Then the program started with lots of their traditional dance with 3 men and 4 women. The men danced the ‘Hukka’ dance and the women did the ‘Poi’ dance with ‘poi’s in hand. The rest of the dance and performance was the combined effort of men and women. Finally they made the program interactive by calling the audience (us) on the stage to dance. They called people from different table, they taught the steps for ‘Poi’ and ‘Hukka’ dance and they made us dance. From our family, Shriyaa represented for the ‘poi’ dance. She had her first stage, first performance in front of completely new audience away from her school. She did pretty well. As a mom I was so happy for my daughter volunteering.

After another tired long day, we went to our hotel room and had good sleep. The next day was our final day.

Day 4:

We started our day with the schedule from the front desk of the hotel we stayed. We went to a Mc Donald’s again there and grabbed our breakfast and went to a nearby shop to quickly grab a souvenir for our trip remembrance, then went to the information center. We got some idea for scheduling the day and then we went to the ‘kuirau park’ where is park is fully covered with natural geysers everywhere. The park also had a swimming pool paid one though. They had all pools warm naturally and they also had natural spas. The full city doesn’t spend money on heating equipments. They make use of the natural resource and convert it to the form they need and use it. After finishing this spot, we went to the ‘Government Park’ which is a park surrounding a big lake. This is the place we saw few unique birds. We also saw big ducks, black and white swans, sea gulls and pigeons as well. We took some snaps there and took off that place. Then we moved on to the tour called ‘ ‘ . That was a 2 to 3 hour tour, they have their own park/area which has naturally erupting geysers, they have ‘kiwi birds’ which is the national bird of New Zealand, they also have ‘mud pools’ here and there. These mud pools were very nice to see. Like when you put a stone in the water, the rings form, similar to that the heat from beneath the earth makes rings in the mud which is almost like clay. That was cool this to watch. They have a food cooking place which is a 4 feet hole on earth which is a naturally formed one, with water till the rim of the whole which was boiling with very big bubbles. We didn’t know the temperature of it though, but it should be above 100 degrees C. They keep big vessels over it and they cook food in this boiling water. We then saw the natural geyser which was erupting from earth like a volcano, but boiling water to a height of 10 to 15 feet from the ground level every 15 to 20 mins and it will be erupting for 20 mins. It was awesome to see it very close. The kiwi birds are almost extinct. They safeguard the ones available in a dark place with only mild path lights for us to go around. These birds are nocturnal. They used to have some millions of birds few years ago but now it’s only 70 thousand birds altogether available throughout New Zealand. We could hardly see the bird… in the dark… but we did at least see the image of it. We finally ended our trip here. We started back to Auckland for our flight at 7.30 pm on Jun 3rd 2010. It was again a 2 and ½ hour drive back to the airport from Rotorua.

While driving back, we got to see lot of lama’s, the baby ones, in a bunch here and there… WOW, we finally saw an animal of that country. We took some pictures. We then moved on our journey, wanted to get some native chocolates for our friends, so we then stopped by a convenience store which was pretty big like Wal-Mart. In the front they had a coffee shop where we ordered hot chocolate for the kids and a coffee for ourselves. That was the one store we had an excellent coffee and hot chocolate. It tasted excellente! Then we finally drove to the airport, left the car at the rental spot and checked in our baggage and get set go to our place with another 12 hour drive back to LAX.

We reached LAX at 12 pm on 3rd Jun 2010. Our friends came to pick us up and we are back to California…. The kids each of them were the happiest person once we reached home after the hectic but fun trip. They were the ones who were totally tired of the trip.

Are we contented with our life?

I usually go for a walk in the afternoons, in the office at about 3 pm most of the days. Just to relax from the hectic day at work and go around the buildings with greens on its sides and take a fresh breath, to get back to work and be more productive. And while I walk I use to just think about something which I wanted to and couldn’t get time for me the rest of the day and you know, just to have some time alone. Once in a while you need to have some time alone... it’s true or not, I feel that.

Today also I left and when I opened the building door to go outside, I can see one more lady coming from inside the building, ready to leave home. So I just hold the door for her until she gets out and she said "Thanks!” Guess What? She is physically challenged. Yes! Both her legs are slightly bent and she is trying to manage her walking with out a stick and she is doing pretty well. She cannot walk like how we do but she was doing great. I kind of got pitied her. To my surprise, she was walking in the same path I take to go for a walk and her parking lot was some where around that area. She was going in front of me and when I was just putting my head and down and walking , suddenly I heard a "thud" sound, when I looked up, there she is ... she fell down right in front of me. I was shocked and ran to help her lift. She said "that's ok. This is what happens every time.” I asked her "R u Ok?” she said "I am. It’s the problem I have." and started to walk towards her car. I felt bad at heart, I again asked her, "do you need any help?", she said, "I am fine”.

OMG! What is happening with most of us? She has more confidence what we have. Kudos! To her. She takes life as it is. But we try to always get not satisfied with what ever we have. One should think, what do we don’t have? Instead of thinking what should I still need to have me satisfied? Be contented with what ever you have and try the next level. But for the sake of trying the next level, don't loose your today's happiness.

Yesterday is History
Tomorrow is Mystery
Only Today is real.... live it!

God has given us everything for leading a good life, more than anything he has given a good health, which many people don’t have. I really felt bad many times, when people compare them with those who are much more than them and loose their happiness and not comparing them to those who are much less than them and be happy.

What ever you have is the best you can get for this life. It’s like a chain....
If you have a good health, with all the parts of the body, good family, blessed to get 3 meals a day, have clothes to wear and protect you according to climatic changes...... then comes the next level of expectations... good job, good car, good house..... are we satisfied even then... NO. Then comes the next level of comparison and go in search of even better job which will pay you more, nice hike every year, you are ready even to travel long distances and spend 2 hours in the morning and 2 hrs in the evening in just driving and forget to spend time with the kids and the family.

What do you gain at the end? NOTHING except for money. With too much of that no one is going to be happy, neither you not the people around you. So at the end, just for nothing you stressed out a lot at work and spoiled your health in many ways (stress, not eating properly, going late to bed, waking up early without getting a proper 8 hour sleep), loose the good happy days with the kids and your family. Can you see this to be a fake life?

God has given only one life and we have to enjoy it to our best, enjoy each and every day, every minute... we should try to be happy with what we have.

My husband gave me my first valentine gift after our engagement and before our marriage. Guess what? Some ornament? Some dress? Something flashy? No... It was a book, can you believe? The book is "The Present". It was really good, it insists that the present (today) is a present (gift) to you, so make use of it. I realized these only after my marriage and still trying to put everything into action, didn’t achieve it yet.

Inventions @ my kitchen 4 my kids lunch

Moms… are the kids making you crazy by not eating lunch at school? Are you in search of a nice kid loving menu for your little ones? Then this is the place for you to gather some information.
I underwent all these and kitchen became my research laboratory every day when I prepare lunch for my kids. These little ones started kindling my brain, and I found good and healthy stuffs to pack for them. Of course there are few items, which are not that healthy, but we need to send the kids food like that once in a while, so that they don’t get aversion towards food by itself.
I always used to keep 3 items for them to school.

1. Main dish
2. Veggie side
3. Fruit of the day

Note: They don’t finish of all the three every day.

I always make sure that what ever dish I cook for the kids; I use the frozen mixed vegetables in almost every dish, so that they are not lacking veggies in their food.

Main dish list for their lunch box
Mac&cheese
Mixed rice – (broccoli, carrot, beans)
Stuffed Chappati – Gobi/Aalu

All these 3 will make a complete lunch for them and they will have enough nutrients for the day. But be sure.. they will not eat everything every day, but these are my best picks, which went successful with my kids most of the time.

Badham Halwa

Hey its sweet time again. I dont like sweets much, but all of a sudden created interest in making them. One day, when I was thinking about it, it striked my mind that there are lots of Badham got hidden in the pantry shelves, we actually forgot abut it. Then I decided to make Badham Halwa out of it. It came out really well.

Here goes the recipe

Ingredients:
1 cup Badham
1 cup Brown Sugar/ white sugar
milk needed amount
Ghee 4 Tbsp

Method:
Soak the Badham for 2 hrs in hot water. So that it will be easy for us to peel the skin off. After peeling the skin, put the badham pieces into a blender and add milk to it just until the badham pieces are immersed into it. Grind the badhams with milk and dont make it a smooth paste. make it coarse. Then add 4 Tbsp of Ghee in a non stick pan and add this mixture to the ghee, put sugar right away along with the badham paste and stir it continuously without leaving even a minute. It will take nearly 20 to 30 minutes for the halwa to be ready.

Enjoy!

Banana Bread Recipe

One day, when all bananas at home started to have black spots on them...getting over riped, i then decided to do banana bread. Searched in the internet and found a very good recipe. I did some changes to it and got a wonderful banana bread. and since i didnt have a bread makin tray, i have to make it a banana cake (named by me ;))

Here is the recipe which i got in the internet.

Ingredients
3 or 4 ripe bananas, smashed
1/3 cup melted butter
1 cup sugar (can easily reduce to 3/4 cup)
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
Pinch of salt
1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour

Method
No need for a mixer for this recipe. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). With a wooden spoon, mix butter into the mashed bananas in a large mixing bowl. Mix in the sugar, egg, and vanilla. Sprinkle the baking soda and salt over the mixture and mix in. Add the flour last, mix. Pour mixture into a buttered 4x8 inch loaf pan. Bake for 1 hour. Cool on a rack. Remove from pan and slice to serve.

The changes i made to it, i added orange juice instead of vanilla essence and used brown sugar instead of the regular sugar. And added dried berries and mixed it at the end. Baked the cake at 350 degrees for 45 mins. And the cake is ready.
It came out like the plum cake in India, which I used to love in my childhood.

mmmm.....YUMMY! my kids loved it.

Make a Difference

A man was walking down a deserted Mexican beach at sunset. As he walked along he began to see another man in the distance. As he grew nearer he noticed that the local native kept leaning down, picking something up, and throwing it out into the water. Time and again he kept hurling things out into the ocean. As he approached even closer he noticed that the man was picking up starfish that had washed up onto the beach, and one at a time, he was throwing them back into the ocean. The first man was puzzled. He approached the second man and said, "Good Evening Friend, I was wondering what you are doing?" And he replied, "I'm throwing these starfish back into the ocean. You see its low tide right now and all these starfish have been washed up onto the shore. If I don't throw them back into the sea, they will die from the lack of oxygen." "I understand, the first man replied "but there must be thousands of starfish on this beach and you couldn't possibly get to all of them. There are simply too many and don't you realize that this is happening on hundreds of beaches up and down this coast ... can't you see that you can't possibly make a difference? The local native smiled, bent down, picked up yet another starfish ... and as he threw it back out into the sea, he replied, "It made a difference to that one!" You may feel like you cannot make a difference in the world today, but you CAN make a difference in one life at a time.
Lessons to be learnt: Never underestimate your own efforts. You too could make a difference. Don't ask what the world could do for you; seek what you could do to the world.

Five Lessons Shared About Helping Others

I read this article in a news letter. I thought i would post it in my blog.
First Important Lesson – Cleaning Lady
During Raju’s second month of college, his professor gave them a pop quiz. He was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until he read the last one:

“What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?” Surely this was some kind of joke. He had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50’s, but how would he know her name? He handed in his paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count towards their quiz grade. “Absolutely” said the professor. “In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say “hello”. Raju never forgot that lesson and he also learned her name was “Dorothy”.

Second Important Lesson – Pickup In The Rain
One night, at 11.30 p.m., an older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rain storm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride. Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960’s. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxi-cab. She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man’s door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A special note was attached. It read:

“Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husbands’ beside just before he passed away… God Bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others.” Sincerely, Mrs. Nat King Cole

Third Important Lesson – Always Remember Those Who ServeIn the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.
“How much is an ice cream sundae?” he asked. “Fifty cents,” replied the waitress. The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it. “Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?” he inquired. By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient.
“Thirty-five cents,” she brusquely replied. The little boy again counted his coins. “I’ll have the plain ice cream,” he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table, there, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies.
You see, he couldn’t have the sundae because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.

Fourth Important Lesson – The Obstacle In Our PathIn ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the kings’ wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the kind for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way.
Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many god coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was fro the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand – Even obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.
Fifth Important Lesson – Giving When It Counts
Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz, who was suffering from a rare & serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister.
I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying “Yes, I’ll do it if it will save her.” As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as well all did, seeing the color returning to her cheek. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, “Will I start to die right away?”
Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her.

Awesome Feeling to meet a long lost friend in Orkut

The day after pongal, 15 Jan 2010, I saw a scrap from my long lost friend.
Too surprised to see that message, to see if i am the right person. Yes, i got a chance to get back to my old friend who did my 4Th and 5Th standard in RSK, HR. Sec School, Trichy. We both were searching each other all these years and we talked to each other after so many many years. I couldn't recognize her with the photo she had in orkut but she guessed me with my picture. A good start for this new year :)
